Landscapes & trees

This category is probably the most varied and biggest category, since I have a strong love for the natural environment and I use it as inspiration for a wide amount of different artwork. Mediums that I use to create my landscapes include, but are not limited to: Charcaol drawings, oil paintings, watercolour paintings, pencil sketches, acrylic paintings, mixed media artworks, digital or photographic illustrations, photographic work, drawings or paintings in ink, mixed media work with coffee, and collages.
The landscapes featured in my work usually represents my own environmental setting or a landscape that I have a strong feeling towards. Some landscapes are also drawn from memory or created as a new, fantastical place. Locations for some of my landscapes include: Upington in the Northern Cape, the Vaal River in Gauteng, Cape Town and surrounds in the Western Cape, and areas around Pretoria, Johannesburg and the Vaal Triangle.

Trees' is a favorite subject matter for my drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographic work. The textures on the bark, the patterns on the leaves and the beautiful silhouettes that trees make against the sky are all things that inspire me. I've done a variety of artworks inspired by trees - some materials or mediums include ink, watercolour, charcaol, wire, pencil, oil paint, acrylics, masking tape and scraperboard.
Abstract

A lot of my work is done in a very intuitive manner, without a clear idea of what I want the outcome to be. Most, if not all, of my abstract work is approached in this 'free' way where I just keep adding and changing the artwork until I am satisfied with the way that it looks. I often use ink for its unpredictability and combine it with different other mediums to add to its appeal and boldness.
Sketches & Drawings

All artwork usually starts with a drawing or pre-sketch, right? Well, I also believe that drawing is an art in itself. A lot of different and unique qualities can be added to an artwork with the use of drawing techniques and skills. I love incorporating drawing into my paintings and mixed media work, and love spending time doing drawings or sketches. Subsequently scraperboard and charcaol is two mediums that I love working in.
Installation & Sculpture

I am currently focusing on using waste materials, or things that we usually throw away, in creating new sculpture work - whether it be aesthetic, conceptual or practical. Rather than using traditional mediums such as clay, bronze and plaster, I try to use different materials and to work in assemblage or additive techniques to create sculptural pieces. I also use found materials and objects that have certain connotations or meaning to me. Some materials that I enjoy using includes: wire, Mendall 90, coffee for colouring, newspaper as base, plastic, wool, grass, rocks, wood and glue. A lot of the materials that are used along with paint, glue and Mendall 90, are things that I pick up on the street or rescue from rubbish bins. Reuse, recylce, recreate!
Land Art & Photography

Following from my love for landscapes and nature, I enjoy doing Land Art or Earth Art - greatly inspired by Strijdom van der Merwe and Andy Goldsworthy.
